Hunts Point Bryant Avenue Pedestrian Bridge Receives ACECNJ Honor Award

Hunts Point Bryant Avenue Pedestrian Bridge Receives ACECNJ Honor Award

SJH proudly announces that our Hunts Point Bryant Avenue Pedestrian Bridge received the Honor Award at the 54th ACECNJ Engineering Excellence Awards Banquet on March 12, 2025, at the Forsgate Country Club in Jamesburg, NJ. This recognition highlights SJH’s dedication to innovative engineering solutions and improving community connectivity. As the Engineer of Record for the bridge replacement, SJH played a key role in the New York State Department of Transportation’s (NYSDOT) $1.7 billion Hunts Point Interstate Access Improvement Project. The new 459-foot-long, five-span bridge carries pedestrian and bike traffic over Bruckner Expressway, Bruckner Boulevard, and Amtrak/CSX rail lines, enhancing safety and accessibility for the local community. Despite the complexity of the congested site, numerous stakeholders, and a staged construction schedule, SJH’s expertise in Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques ensured the bridge was opened before the 2024-2025 school year, restoring a vital link for students and residents. Delivered in separate packages with different lead contractors and design partners, the project overcame challenges related to logistics, constructability, and scheduling. The final design minimized future maintenance needs within the railroad’s Right-of-Way, simplified demolition, and reconstruction, and eliminated risks associated with temporary shoring. Following AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and ADA standards, the project prioritized public health, safety, and welfare while reducing overall costs and enhancing public satisfaction.
