PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Under this firm-fixed price contract, SJH served as the prime consultant to provide seven (7) multi-disciplined teams of licensed architects, engineers, and dining consultants to conduct assessments and produce associated cost estimates for forty-eight (48) assets throughout the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) within a 60 day time-frame. The USMMA campus is situated on an eighty-two (82) acre waterside site. Of the 48 assets, forty five (45) are buildings, totaling 929,500 square feet. The academic facilities include classrooms, administrative, auditoriums, dining, research, laboratories, clinic, library, museum, chapel, dormitory, residential, storage, industrial, recreation / athletic, training, and infrastructure components.

This effort supports Repair and Alteration projects required to ensure the short-term (through 5 years) operational continuity of each building and plan for long-term (6 through 20 years) major capital reinvestment in the campus for long-term utilization. The SJH-led team collaborated with multiple federal agencies including USDOT, USMMA, MARAD to produce Capital Planning, Asset Management and Facility Assessment reports on schedule and within budget.

The project followed LEED, NFPA, NHPA, ADA, and SHPO standards. The Classical Revival-style buildings are designed with an emphasis on balance and symmetry. This cohesion and repetition of architectural elements was a conscious decision on the part of the architects who designed the buildings and give the space a campus-like feeling.
