The Croton-Harmon S-34 Signal Substation replacement design project involved an existing motor-alternator set located in the Metro-North Railroad Signal System Substation (S-34). The Croton-Harmon signal power substation converts 60 Hz AC power from Con Edison to 100 Hz AC power to provide the primary power feed to Metro-North’s signal systems along the Hudson Line. The project involved the replacement of the electric motor-alternator set, including control circuitry, transformers, and associated electric switchgear. A mobile signal power substation with associated controls and switchgear was provided in an outdoor walk-in enclosure to maintain continuous 100 Hz power to the signal lines.
SJH developed civil, structural, and architectural designs, and replaced the roof of the existing building and incorporated modifications to place the new equipment in the building. Additional equipment was located on platforms around the building. SJH performed all the related structural designs. Civil designs included grading around the site along with drainage improvements.
