The Sandy Hook Recreation Area is a 1,665-acre barrier peninsula within view of the Manhattan skyline, located on the northern tip of the Jersey Shore. After the devastating impacts from Hurricane Sandy were assessed, this $850K Design-Build rehabilitation will provide building upgrades at six impacted Beach Centers. The repairs are being made to support a resilient Concessions and Visitor Service operation at the Park into the future.
The purpose of this project is to maintain concession services at each of the Beach Centers with mobile food units in lieu of permanent kitchen facilities. In recent years since Hurricane Sandy, the Park replaced its conventional Concessions operations with mobile food services during the Park’s busy season, from around Memorial Day to Labor Day. By utilizing mobile services, the facilities are able to be moved out of the flood zone during storm events. The site designs for this project will provide permanent locations for mobile concession services to operate.
Building upgrades include the elevation of electrical systems out of the FEMA 100 year floodplain, structural modifications for flow through design and the use of resilient materials for wet floodproofing. SJH is responsible for the design of new electrical power wiring, panelboards, lighting, replacement of water heaters, changes to the storm drainage risers, replacement of the split system HVAC units, new yard and wall hydrants, and freeze protection. The design integrates photovoltaic solar panels and other sustainable elements. Designs meet the International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, and National Electric Codes.
