The NJDOT began construction on the $900M federally funded Direct Connection project to provide a seamless route for I-295 motorists traveling through the interchange of I-295, Route 42, and I-76 in Bellmawr, Mt. Ephraim, and Gloucester City. Approximately 250,000 vehicles traveled through the Route 295/42/76 interchange each weekday to and from Camden, Philadelphia, and other destinations. The previous configuration required I-295 motorists to exit the interstate and weave across other congested highway lanes to return to I-295. The project eliminated dangerous merge conditions by constructing a viaduct to carry I-295 traffic over Route 42 and I-76.
During the construction phase of this contract, SJH provided construction inspection services as a subconsultant to IH Engineers, P.C. Our Senior Inspector served as the Senior Bridge/Roadway Inspector on the project and supervised most of the nighttime work, focusing on the construction of a multiple-span bridge, similar to a viaduct. SJH inspected the bridge, supervised the erection of steel at some spans, and the concreting of the deck.
SJH also supervised the construction of embankments, drainage structures, and roadway appurtenances. In addition, we inspected nighttime traffic control and reviewed the daily reports of other inspectors. We were familiar with all NJDOT standard guidelines, and the Site Manager program used to monitor construction progress. SJH was scheduled to participate in this construction supervision project for an additional 2 to 3 years.
