This project involved the complete replacement of the Route 130 (Cresent Boulevard) bridge over the Main Branch of Newton Creek. The bridge was originally built in 1927, rehabilitated in 1941, and widened in 1956. The 11-span structure is located at M.P. 28 of Route 130 in Haddon Township and Camden City. The bridge carries Route 130 over the Main Branch of Newton Creek, a tidal-influenced stream about 2 miles from the Delaware River near the Walt Whitman Bridge. Route 130 is divided by a median barrier and consists of two 10-foot travel lanes, one 11-foot right shoulder, and sidewalk in the northbound direction, and three 11-foot travel lanes and sidewalk in the southbound direction, resulting in a total curb-to-curb width of 66 feet. The NJDOT Bridge Management System identified the bridge in poor condition with a priority ranking for repair. SJH initially completed the CD report under a contract with NJDOT.
The Preliminary Preferred Alternative was forwarded, and Arora designed the replacement bridge. SJH provided the evaluation and preliminary engineering design services for new retaining walls that support the approaches at all four quadrants. We established the basis of design/design criteria and evaluated up to three (3) retaining wall alternatives, which included cast-in-place reinforced concrete retaining walls, prefabricated modular walls, or soldier pile/lagging walls. SJH prepared a comparison matrix showing the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative and the related estimated construction costs. We recommended the wall type selection for the Final Design. SJH addressed retaining wall-related constructability comments from NJDOT Construction Management, Traffic Operations, and any maintenance review comments from the Regional Maintenance Engineer. The total project construction cost was estimated at $12M. In Spring of 2023, construction started.
