The MTA awarded this $382M Design-Build contract to the Halmar International LLC and AECOM Design-Build team. All Metro-North Railroad trains traveling along the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven lines utilized the Park Avenue Viaduct to access Grand Central Terminal, totaling 98% of all Metro-North trains. The mile-and-a-quarter stretch encompassed four Metro-North tracks between 110th Street and the Harlem River Lift Bridge. This project replaced major segments of the aging elevated steel structure. The work included replacing existing structures, tracks, power, communications, and the signal system from the north side of East 115th Street to the south side of East 123rd Street. The project aimed to reduce local noise and vibration levels, maintain public safety, and make the viaduct resilient and sustainable.
SJH’s scope of work included utility coordination, temporary and permanent civil, drainage, and utility designs, peer review of existing framing stability and temporary bracing during construction, and construction support services. SJH was involved in the inspection of spans of the viaduct extending from 110th Street to 132nd Street. The in-depth inspection involved non-destructive testing at several locations. SJH also coordinated testing with the testing lab. SJH coordinated lane closures with NYCDOT OCMC and the NYPD. Additionally, SJH assisted with the preparation of inspection reports for the in-depth inspection of the viaduct and supported traffic control and coordination efforts.
