Newark Penn Station Modernization

To date, SJH was involved in two task orders under this contract for the Newark Penn Station Modernization, Elevator Replacements, and HVAC Upgrades. The first task involved the replacement of two elevators at the station. The second task involved the replacement of chillers on the roof and two other pieces of equipment within the station building. SJH was responsible for the structural design aspects of the projects.

Elevator Replacements at Newark Penn Station
For the elevator replacement task, SJH inspected the existing framing and determined whether any strengthening was required. SJH also designed the new hoist beams to support the new elevators.

Newark Penn Station Modernization HVAC Upgrades
For the replacement of the chillers on the roof, SJH inspected the existing dunnage and determined that some steel members needed replacement. SJH designed the replacement of the steel members and developed new framing to support the new chillers. The designs also included new railings. SJH checked the capacity of the existing floors to support the new equipment loads within the building. Some walls were opened to facilitate the installation of the new equipment. SJH evaluated the feasibility of the installation with the various existing obstructions in the station building. Drawings were developed to show a feasible path for the new equipment.
