The Lincoln Tunnel is a three-tube, vehicular tunnel facility that carries traffic between Weehawken, NJ and Midtown Manhattan, NY. Each tunnel is 21.5 feet wide and carries two lanes of traffic. Exhaust ducts are located above traffic and move air to the ventilation buildings.
As a task order under the Expert Professional Structural Engineering Services (Bridges) As Requested on a “Call In” Basis During 2017 agreement with the Port Authority, as a subconsultant to HDR, SJH performed the in-depth inspections of the approaches on both sides of the tunnel to exactly identify the deterioration and prepare repair details. The approach viaducts included steel girder supported concrete decks on steel bents and concrete substructures. The steel elements exhibited heavy corrosion and the concrete substructures had severe spalls and other deterioration.
Hands-On Field Inspections were conducted to locate and quantify deterioration, determined the severity, and defined the limits of the repair work. The inspections included steel sections, bearings, concrete piers, capbeams and abutments. Our team prepared inspection reports per PANYNJ guidelines and coordinated inspection activities with PANYNJ to obtain required permits.
