Harmon Shop Replacement Phase V Stage 2 Design-Build
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

SJH provided design and construction phase services for the $440M Harmon Shop Replacement Phase V Stage 2, as part of the design-build team. The replacement project will also incorporate new features to reduce energy consumption, such as an insulated roof and increased natural lighting The main project elements included:

New Running Repair and Support Shop (RRS) with blow shed. The new two-story RRS facility features isolated and combined spread footings, foundation perimeter wall, on grade first-floor slab concrete ramps, exterior aprons and approach slabs, and in-ground car hoist pits. A truss supported beam framing system supports the second-floor shops, pedestrian overpass, metal roof deck, car and roof level platforms, and top running bridge cranes. SJH provided structural design support to various building components using ETABS.

New Pedestrian Overpass between RRS and EMU Annex Building. Using STAADPro, the 17’-6” wide, 76’ long pedestrian overpass spans between the EMU building and the RRS. The design considers large differential movements between the two buildings due to temperature and seismic events. SJH coordinated with WSP for design loads at each building support.

Complete demolition of building nos. 5 and 6 by removing the superstructures and all of the structures below grade to accommodate new proposed foundations.
