As first P3 in the Northeast for a bridge construction project, this $1.5B effort involved the replacement of the 89-year old existing bridge with a new dual-span cable-stayed structure. SJH’s design, based on AASHTO LRFD method, in accordance with all federal, New York State, New Jersey State, and local standards, included:
Travis Spur Rail Bridge carrying Conrail over I-278 Westbound and Eastbound roadways, a two-span simply supported steel thru-girder railroad structure with maximum span lengths of 120 feet. The design features Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques using precast abutments and pier caps for the rapid in-line replacement of the existing five-span structure in a single weekend shutdown. SJH prepared design calculations and specifications following the AREMA Manual for Railroad Engineering and Conrail standards, and developed contract drawings using AutoCAD. The railroad structure was designed using CSiBridge general finite element program to account for substructure stiffness and 2,500-year seismic events. Performed load ratings of the thru-girders as per AREMA Manual using spreadsheet with result from CSiBridge.
TSRB ABC ConstructionSuperstructures over Westbound and Eastbound NJ Turnpike Approaches. Designed two parallel, five-span WB and seven-span EB, continuous structures using 71-inch precast prestressed concrete economical fabrication (PCEF) bulb-T girders with 145-foot maximum span lengths. The WB superstructure features spans with girders in flared arrangement. Performed design and Level 1 LFR and LRFR load ratings in PGSuper in accordance with AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation.
Eastbound NJ Approach between Piers 12 and 14, featuring a three-span superstructure with two spans of continuous 71-inch PCEF bulb-T girders, and a single-span over an abandoned chemical coastline with 55-inch prestressed PCEF bulb-T girders. Performed design and Level 1 LFR and LRFR load ratings in PGSuper..
Static and ITS Sign Structures for both EB and WB roadways using STAADPro general finite element program.
SJH’s scope of work for this project included structural design and construction support services.
