Roof Replacement Alexandria Yard S & I Shop Building
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

SJH provided architectural and engineering design services for field survey, program reporting, design drawings, specifications, and estimating activities to replace the 68,000-square-foot main roof on the Alexandria S & I Shop Building. The work included the complete removal of the existing roof system down to the structural deck, and installation of a new roofing system with insulation. The existing skylights were replaced with new, taller skylights to accommodate the proposed slope of the roof. A minimum slope of ¼ inch per foot was recommended and achieved wherever possible. SJH provided flashing details around the new skylights and at the parapets around the roof perimeter. The new roofing system consisted of EPDM membrane roofing with a minimum 4-inch Carlisle insulation. The insulation included two components: a 1-inch Carlisle Polyiso HP insulation fastened to the metal deck, and an additional 3-inch Carlisle Sure-Seal HP insulation installed above that. The EPDM membrane was a 60-mil Carlisle Sure-White membrane installed with adhesive. The roofing work had to be carefully coordinated with rail yard operations to minimize impacts to the shop and yard activities.
