Under this contract, SJH inspected sixty-three (63) bridges in Camden County and twenty-one (21) state-owned bridges as part of NJDOT’s Routine Bridge Inspection Program. The bridges are of various configurations, including steel, concrete, and arch structures, and span over roadways, waterways, and railroads. The bridges included in this assignment were categorized as ‘NBIS’ bridges, as they were greater than 20 ft. in span including some multi-cell culverts.
Inspections focused on structural elements, including superstructure primary and secondary members, concrete decking, substructure elements, abutments, piers, and other safety features, such as guiderails and barriers. The approach roadways and appurtenances, including utilities, were also inspected.
Based on the NBIS Standards, our inspectors completed the required SI&A forms, and performed element-level coding, along with deterioration estimates. Underwater inspections were performed by our subconsultant for several structures, with deeper water depths and lower free boards. CADD sketches showing the bridge sections with the sounding of streambed levels were developed for bridges over water. The coding information was entered into the NJDOT’s CombIS system.
Depending on the severity of the deficiency, Priority Reports of differing levels were developed for identified deficiencies. The reports included repair recommendations with order-of-magnitude cost estimates.
