Bridge and Railway Engineering

For the duration of this five-year, $3M contract, SJH supported the prime consultant, Hardesty and Hanover, by providing engineering, inspection, and design services. Our team responded quickly and effectively to a broad range of planning, engineering, and design issues on parallel assignments of varying size and complexity. To date, we have been involved in the following tasks:

TO #2, Regular Inspection of Estling Lake, Powder Mill Pond, and Peapack Brook Dams – Inspections were conducted for three dams, focusing on structural deficiencies, with concrete spalls and cracks identified and noted in the report. Most of the inspections were performed at night and over weekends. (03/2020-04/2020)

TO #3, In-house Extension of Staff and Support of Development of 5-Year Capital Program – SJH provided in-house staff extension and support for the development of NJ Transit’s 5-year capital program. We provided concept-level structural engineering design support, cost estimating, and schedule development services. We also prepared structural designs for a retaining wall at Hoboken Station and a $90M estimate for the Lackawanna to Andover railroad rehabilitation to secure Federal Railroad Administration funding. TO #5, Newark Penn Station – Platform Repairs – SJH performed inspections of Platform D, including the platform structure, canopies, and roof. Based on the findings, we prepared 30% design drawings for the structural rehabilitation of the platform elements. The designs included concrete and steel repair details, roof and skylight repair details, and staging plans to implement repairs without interfering with passenger operations. We also performed order of magnitude estimates for platform D repairs and Delco Yard improvements. (09/2020-08/2021)

TO #6, Structural Design for NY Penn Station Waiting Area – SJH is providing structural engineering design services, CADD, and cost estimating support for improvements to the NJ Transit waiting area at New York Penn Station. (8/2021- Ongoing)
