The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of New Jersey awarded SJH with a Distinguished Award for Engineering Excellence for the three-stage replacement of the Town of Dover’s Rutgers Street Bridge. SJH provided complete design, construction support, resident engineering, and inspection services for this $2.6M context-sensitive bridge replacement featuring integral abutment design with aesthetic parapets. The wider bridge accommodates two-way traffic, compared to the previous one-lane bridge, and added a pedestrian sidewalk. The structure also accounts for critical utilities carried underneath, considers environmental impacts to adjacent riparian zone, wetlands, and minimized ground disturbance to reduce impacts to remnants of the historic Morris Canal. By incorporating AASHTO, NJDOT, and Morris County standards, SJH’s effective design enhances the bridges attractiveness and functionality. This project will be featured at the 52nd Engineering Excellence Awards Banquet on March 15, 2023.
