SJH was responsible for design services for a new utility building addition onto an existing warehouse facility for the Con Edison Utility Building in Brooklyn, New York. The project involved the demolition of three (3) buildings, converting the area into a Parking Lot and the restoration of an existing wall for stability.
Our team evaluated the geotechnical parameters provided by the soil boring contractor and developed foundation designs for the building. We performed the structural analysis and design of the addition which included steel frame to supports for the roof and partitions of the new structure, foundations and grade beams. The existing walls facing the streets had to be retained and incorporated into the final structure to comply with Borough President’s Office requirements. The walls were braced during construction. We reviewed the available drawings, visited the site and performed the following design services for the preparation of contract documents including:
- Inspected and structurally evaluated the existing masonry wall to remain.
- Based on the inspection and evaluation, we designed wall strengthening / shoring details
- Provided structural design for the new structure to enclose the existing fire protection system
- Designed the foundations for the new fence, gates, light poles and other installations, as required
- Prepared design drawings and specification, per Con Edison standards
In addition to this building extension, the remainder of the area was converted into a Parking Lot. SJH designed the asphalt concrete pavement for the parking lot with curbs, and drive in lanes. Low level retaining walls were designed on one side of the Parking Lot to retain the earth and support the grade differences.
Some sidewalks were demolished and rebuilt along the streets outside. SJH coordinated with the City of New York regarding the demolition and reconstruction of the sidewalks, and tree planters along the sidewalk. The trees on the outside sidewalks were protected during construction, as per Parks Department specifications.
