SERVICES PROVIDED
SJH performed architectural, structural engineering, construction support services, and building condition surveys at various Newark Public Schools.
Chimney Rehabilitation, Lincoln Street School:
The existing masonry chimney was inspected for deterioration, loose joints, cracks, and displaced coping stones. SJH developed repair details and construction documents for the masonry repair, repointing, and replacement of the coping stones, including the chimney cap. The team also provided construction support services during the project.
Roof / Parapet Rehabilitation, East Side High School:
SJH inspected the roof parapet damaged by lightning and developed repair plans and specifications for its rehabilitation.
Avon School, Avon Avenue:
SJH represented NPS and conducted a structural investigation of the roof beams damaged by the installation of T-Mobile antennas. The team coordinated and reviewed the proposed repair details and provided final inspection of the completed repair work.
Hawkins Street School:
Hawkins Street School is a 50-year-old, four-story brick building consisting of masonry construction with a combination of wood and concrete floors. SJH inspected the interior stair and an exterior window façade to confirm their structural integrity. The team visited the building twice, on October 10, 2008, and October 29, 2008. During the first visit, the existing conditions were observed. Following this, some of the cladding was removed to expose the connections of the staircase stringers, which were inspected during the second site visit.
A window at the landing between the first and second floors was braced by timber beams on the inside and steel angles on the outside. Above the window, timber planks were installed as facing. The planks appeared unstable and were disconnected at several locations. SJH prepared a report detailing the inspection and recommended that the staircase was structurally safe, but that the window at the landing and the timber facing above the window be replaced. In the summer of 2009, SJH provided construction management services for the window replacement and façade rehabilitation.
