The Rehabilitation of Seven Grand Central Parkway Bridges Between Union Turnpike and Commonwealth Boulevard
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This $161M project involved the rehabilitation, including bridge deck replacement, approach slab replacement, bearing replacement, drainage replacement, barrier replacement, lighting replacement, and other necessary repairs at Grand Central Parkway (GCP) mainline over Winchester Boulevard and Cross Island Parkway (CIP), Ramp H over CIP, and GCP mainline over Vanderbilt Parkway. Full and partial depth deck repairs and other repairs were necessary at GCP over Union Turnpike, Ramp G over Alley Pond Park Access Road, and WB C-D Road over CIP southbound and northbound. Incidental work included ground-mounted signs and two overhead sign structure replacements, minor milling and resurfacing, sidewalk replacement along Winchester Blvd., replacing damaged guide rail along Alley Pond Park Access Road, and cleaning the existing closed drainage system throughout the project limits.

As a subconsultant to the Posillico-Parsons design-build team, SJH provided structural design services including all plan sheet development, calculations, specifications, basis of design reports, Request for Design Exception, meetings, coordination, third-party coordination, and comment resolution, as required. We provided rehabilitation design on the following three (3) structures:

  • BIN 1076540 (carrying Ramp G Bridge over Alley Pond Park Access Road) full and partial depth deck and approach slab repairs, substructure concrete repairs, superstructure steel repairs, spot painting, bearing cleaning/lubricating/resetting/repainting, steel bridge railing and approach railing replacement, and expansion joint reconstruction.

  • BIN 1076610 (carrying Westbound C-D Road over CIP Southbound) and BIN 1076620 (carrying Westbound C-D Road over CIP Northbound) full and partial depth slab repairs, longitudinal and transverse deck joint refilling, ringstone replacement, stone masonry repair and repointing, repair to underside concrete at the rigid frame arches.

The design complied with the latest AASHTO LRFD bridge design specifications and NYSDOT’s Blue Pages and Design Manual. Concrete repairs included the installation of galvanic anodes to deter bar reinforcement corrosion. The partial or full-depth expansion joint headers used Polyester Polymer Concrete for a durable solution.

SJH was also responsible for the structural design of two (2) span-type overhead sign structures and supports, as well as CAD support to the project lead designer. The team provided engineering support during construction, including shop drawing review, responses to Requests for Information, and design changes due to field and/or unexpected conditions.
