GW Carver Building

This $4 million façade rehabilitation project involved design and inspection of masonry repairs and replacement, lintel replacement, replacement of lintel connections to spandrel beams, window caulking and sealing the sills, drainage improvements in the courtyard, and fire alarm and public address system replacements at George Washington Carver Elementary School.

Galvanized steel angles were used for the masonry supports on relieving angles and they were bolted to the spandrel steel beams. Adequate waterproofing and flashing was provided to prevent moisture intrusion and corrosion of the steel.

SJH designed drainage improvements for the facilities, which contained two courtyards, one in the middle of the classrooms, and the other adjacent to the library. We performed a field survey the existing courtyards to identify all the topographical features and the elevations. Based on these elevations, we prepared contour mapping showing existing ground elevations using InRoads. Grading plans were developed to improve drainage and divert water away from the building. Some areas of the courtyards were paved with concrete to provide adequate drainage.

Drawings and specifications were prepared per NJSDA requirements.
