Hunts Point Interstate Access Improvement Project – Contract 3, Design-Build Project
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This $447M project was the third and final contract of NYSDOT’s Hunts Point Interstate Access Improvement Project. This design-build project improved access between the Hunts Point Peninsula and the Bruckner Expressway, addressed structural and operational deficiencies within the existing infrastructure, replaced aging structures, and enhanced operations by increasing traffic speeds, updating roadway alignments, and expanding overall throughput.

As part of the design team, SJH was responsible for the structural design of the Bryant Ave. Pedestrian Bridge over Bruckner Expressway and Bruckner Blvd., three overhead sign structures supported by the bridge superstructure, four bridge-mounted sign panel supports, a new railroad cut retaining wall, and three railroad cut retaining wall repair/rehabilitations. For the Bryant Ave Pedestrian Bridge, SJH prepared complete construction documents for the 230′ long composite twin-girder span with a 280′ cast-in-place concrete retaining wall approach switchback ramp, including foundations, substructures, superstructures, concrete decks, railing, fencing, and light poles. This phase of the pedestrian bridge design was a continuation of SJH’s effort in Contract 1. It improved pedestrian safety and accessibility with a fully ADA-compliant structure across Bruckner Expressway and Bruckner Blvd. The new and existing retaining walls were in close proximity to the Amtrak ROW. The new retaining wall featured partial T-wall construction and a partial moment slab cantilevered design off an existing retaining wall that remained. SJH also provided design services during construction.
