Tunnel Building Facade

As a task order under this as-needed contract as a subconsultant to Gannett Fleming, SJH was retained as part of the engineering team to provide a Critical Examination of the exterior facades of the Queens Midtown Tunnel Ventilation Buildings on the Queens and Manhattan sides, and the Battery Parking Garage at the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel and prepared an inspection report for the exterior walls and appurtenances, following Local Law 11 inspection procedures.

SJH participated in the façade inspections of all three buildings, which were over 125 ft. tall and feature brick veneers with window openings, lintels, and parapets at the roof level. Some inspections were performed from scaffolds that were dropped from the roof level. Other areas were inspected using a manlift from street level. The inspections were hands on all the deteriorations such as loose joints, cracks, signs of water leakage and displacement in the masonry were noted. Any identified loose material that could be removed by hand was removed. The deteriorations were noted on field notes and included in the report. Any condition identified as requiring immediate action was brought to the attention of TBTA and repair measures were implemented. SJH participated in the inspection report preparation. A report was prepared in Local Law 11 format and submitted to the NYC DOB to meet their requirements.
