SERVICES PROVIDED
As Architect and Engineer of Record, the SJH team provided professional engineering services for Concept Design, Final Design and Construction Phase Services for the Huntington Station East Overpass at Huntington Station on Port Jefferson Branch rail line, owned and operated by Long Island Rail Road in New York. As one of three overpasses within the station, this $3.7M new overpass features a newly enclosed structure with sustainable design, Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques, and improved public safety. Despite the pandemic, the project was completed on time and within budget.
Being the only overpass at the station connecting the parking decks on either side, this newly enclosed overpass provides extensive benefits to the travelling public including shelter from the elements. Aluminum perforated panels along the top and bottom chords promote natural air mitigate vandalism.
Effectively incorporated ABC techniques to provide continuous access to commuters and minimize disturbances, the new overpass was laid out for construction offline, parallel to the existing structure. The uncommonly used Vierendeel Truss design with hollow structural sections connected to each other with complete penetration groove welds allows glass cladding (storefront system) to be installed between truss verticals, resulting in a streamlined, clean appearance.
To avoid the structure from encroaching upon the clearance envelop for PSE&GLI’s 138kV overhead high-tension wires above the connecting staircase between the upper and lower last truss panel and used a flat seam roof tucked in between the top chords to maintain a low profile, achieving a smooth transition to the roof at the connecting staircase.
