PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The $90M federally funded Route 280, Route 21 Interchange Improvements project alleviates the poor condition and associated geometric concerns associated with six existing ramp and mainline structures in the vicinity of the Route 280 interchange with McCarter Highway (Route 21) in the City of Newark. The existing nearly 60-year old structures, were determined to be Structurally Deficient and/or Functionally Obsolete. The improvements modified the existing interchange to provide all interchange movements between Route 280 and Route 21. The project includes reconfiguration of the interchange to provide full movements and consolidated entrance points. The six bridges included in this project are: 0731-154 (I-280 over MLK Blvd), 0731-155 (I-280 over Broad St.), 0731-156 (I-280 over Ramp C), 0731-157 (I-280 over Rt. 21), 0731-158 (Ramp D over Ramp C), 0731-159 (Ramp B over Ramps C & D).

SJH provided a construction inspector for the four-phase construction effort to monitor construction activities involving bridge demolitions, rehabilitated foundations consisting of steel piles, drilled shafts, with spread footings, piers/columns, steel girder erection, HPC deck pours, vibration monitoring, temporary sheeting, and bridge jacking operations.
