Bridge Conditions Inspections
Inspection of 80 Morris County Bridges, Group 14E5
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

SJH was responsible for the routine inspection of 80 bridges in Morris County, NJ. The bridges were of various configurations, including steel, concrete, arch structures, and culvert structures, and spanned over waterways. Inspections focused on various structural elements, including superstructure primary and secondary members, concrete decking, substructure elements, abutments, piers, culverts, and other safety features such as guiderails and barriers.

One of the bridges inspected under this program was the Rutgers Street over Rockaway River bridge, owned by the Town of Dover. Based on our inspection findings at this bridge, the sidewalk was closed, and the fascia girder was replaced based on the design provided by SJH.

Inspections were conducted in accordance with NBIS standards, and inspectors completed the required SI&A forms and COMBIS codes. One of the two inspection cycles was completed. The second cycle was scheduled to begin in 2017. For identified deficiencies, depending on their severity, Priority Reports of varying levels were developed. The reports included repair recommendations along with order-of-magnitude cost estimates. Since the bridges were County-owned, the County was also notified of the recommended priority repairs and associated recommendations.
