SJH was the prime consultant fully responsible for the replacement of the bridge deck of CR 516 over Route 18. Originally built in 1959, CR 516 had an ADT of approximately 22,800, with a 45-mph speed limit. It was classified as an Urban Minor Arterial, with two 12-foot lanes and a total width of 49’-6”. The total deck area was 9,203 SF and the length of the bridge was 185’-6”. The structure was found to be in a state of severe deck deterioration, rated “Poor” (4) in a 2012 Bridge Inspection Report. We prepared final design, MPT plans, utility coordination, community coordination, constructability reviews, QA/QC, construction documents, specifications, and cost estimates.
Our team conducted an in-depth inspection of the structure prior to beginning design and prepared repair details based on additional findings beyond the bridge inspection report. We recommended cast-in-place construction for the bridge deck replacement of a four-span, simply supported, composite steel rolled-beam multi-stringer structure supported by concrete abutments and piers. SJH provided additional repairs to the center pier cap, abutments, guide rail, and replaced a fascia girder. We proposed a two-stage construction approach based on traffic analysis and developed a detour plan.
Incidental work included the replacement of the impact-damaged south fascia stringer and intermediate diaphragms, replacement of nine fixed or expansion rocker bearings in kind, isolated repairs of cracks and spalls in substructure elements, and the replacement of guiderail, fencing, and curbing. We also provided limited milling and overlay of the approach roadways. SJH provided construction support throughout the project’s completion, including responding to RFIs, providing clarifications, conducting site visits, reviewing shop drawings, and attending meetings as necessary for the $2.6M project.
