A section of the Garden State Parkway was widened to accommodate an additional lane and standard shoulders on each side of the roadway. The widening is towards the open median area. Bridges over the parkway were replaced with longer span structures to accommodate the widening and the bridges and culverts carrying the Parkway were widened and extended.
We conducted feasibility studies, coordinated with NJTA and DEP, and prepared construction documents for the replacement of two (2) bridges on this project. The two bridges carry Green Street (CR 539), over the Northbound and Southbound Parkway. The new bridges are multi-stringer structures with Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) wall wrap around integral abutments. The selected design increased constructability, reduced cost of materials and maintenance, and eliminated deck joints. The bridges were replaced in two stages while maintaining two-way 55 mph traffic on Green Street. At some locations, MSE walls were constructed on top of the existing culverts to retain the widened sections of the Parkway. We performed seismic analysis as per NJTA guidelines, inspected the culverts, developed concrete repair details, and provided construction support services.section of the Garden State Parkway was widened to accommodate an additional lane and standard shoulders on each side of the roadway.
