Safety Improvements at Traversable Medians along the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway, NJ
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The scope of this $2.7M project consists of the installation of roadway safety features at thirteen (13) locations along the Pearl Harbor Memorial Turnpike Extension from Milepost P0.9 to P5.5 and twenty (20) locations along the Garden State Parkway from Milepost 6.5 to 168.4. The project also included construction of berm surfacing, grading and associated earthwork activities, the installation of regulatory signs, and other miscellaneous work.
SJH is providing resident engineering and construction inspection services for all work for compliance with contract plans and specifications, inspection of all construction materials to be used at site, obtaining certifications of all manufactured materials, maintaining as-built information, and the preparation of as-built plans. Construction supervision services are performed in accordance with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority’s Standard and Supplementary Specifications.
Maintaining traffic control and safety on high speed and high-volume roadways is extremely important. SJH’s resident engineer and inspectors carefully coordinated lane closings with NJTA Operations and other contractors working in the area. Our staff communicated with the Authority’s Traffic Control Supervisors and NJ State Troopers daily to ensure all lane closings were performed safely at the planned taper points with a minimum inconvenience to the travelling public.
Inspector’s Field Reports (IFR’s) were prepared in the Authority’s CapEx system and turned in to the resident engineer daily. The resident engineer prepared a Combined Field Report (CFR) daily which highlighted the major activities on the project. A Payment Estimate was also prepared in CapEx and was submitted for approval once a month.
Our resident engineer communicated with the design engineer to eliminate any conflicts that arose between planned construction and actual field conditions. Solutions were communicated in the form of Requests for Information (RFI’s) and distributed to the contractor and the inspectors through the resident engineer.
